What is an Abortion Doula?

An abortion doula provides non-medical support for someone going through an abortion. This support can take many forms: a ride to and from the clinic, a hand to hold during an in-clinic procedure, or a nonjudgmental companion during a medication abortion.

“The goals of [abortion doulas] are to lessen emotional distress, such as possible fear, discomfort, and feelings of stigmatization for clients during the surgical abortion visit. They aim to do this by increasing positive emotional responses, such as feelings of empowerment and support, through the provision of information, emotional support, and coping strategies, such as breathing and relaxation techniques. They also provide physical support through massage, hand-squeezing, and other non-invasive forms of touch in an effort to reduce experiences of physical pain during abortion procedures” (Colarossi and Betancourt, Planned Parenthood of New York City: Feasibility and Acceptability of Doula Services for Surgical Abortion, 2011).
