Abortion Doula Training

Nearly ten years ago, Colorado Doula Project created one of the first abortion doula training programs in the United States. After launching it online in 2022, it quickly became a trusted source of information on how to support abortion seekers nationally. To date, more than 900 individuals have taken our training.

In 2026, we revised the training substantially to include multimedia elements, in-depth assessment, and a focus on the client experience at various stages in their reproductive health journey. The training will be revised on an annual basis to ensure that we stay current on the changing landscape of abortion care.

We are proud to share the updated training with you.

Please note that all applicants will undergo a social media review and possible interview process. The course is valued at $750 and lower payment tiers, payment plans, and scholarships are available.

What is an Abortion Doula?

An abortion doula is a non-medical, trained individual who provides continuous educational or informational, emotional, and sometimes physical support for people who are accessing abortion care. This can mean:

  • Listening to a person share their experience while they try to make meaning from it.

  • Driving clients to and from appointments, and assisting them with other travel.

  • Sharing resources on how to access abortion care and supportive services (like childcare).

  • Supporting a person in a clinic or during their abortion experience at home.

  • Providing factual, evidence-based information about abortion.

Why should I become an Abortion Doula?

Abortion rights aren’t just about laws - they’re about access too. As an abortion doula, you will work directly with clients to meet their practical and emotional needs while they are accessing abortion care. Even if you live in a state where abortion rights are secure, there are people in your community who have significant barriers to care that you can help them overcome. As an abortion doula, you aren’t just helping abortions happen, you are caring for the whole humans who need support in a volatile environment.

How do I become an Abortion Doula?

Currently, there are no certifications for abortion doulas like there are for birth or end-of-life doulas. However, if you are interested in learning more about the needs of abortion seekers in the United States, we urge you to consider applying for our course.

We estimate that students will take at least 10-12 hours total to complete the course. Students will work with teaching assistants who will provide feedback on their assessment and reflection exercises. You will learn:

  • How to support individuals at every step of their abortion journey.

  • The context of the current political landscape for abortion care access.

  • How to take care of yourself as a doula and emotional support person.

Please note: All Colorado Doula Project volunteers are required to take this course, but people who complete this course will be invited to apply to volunteer based on our current needs.
